Recording artist and Broadway alum Aaron Carter will take his final bow as love-struck teenager Matt in The Fantasticks at off-Broadway’s Snapple Theater Center on February 17. Carter, who will depart the production for a concert tour, plans to return to the long-running musical at a yet to be determined date after the tour is finished. No replacement for the role of Matt has been announced at this time.
“I’m looking forward to going on tour and working on my music, but The Fantasticks is my home—I will be back,” Carter said in a statement. “Now you all have five weeks to come see me as Matt before I go!”
Featuring a book, music and lyrics by Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt, The Fantasticks tells the story of two neighboring fathers who put up a wall between their houses to ensure their children fall in love—knowing that children always do what their parents forbid. After the young lovers discover their fathers’ plot, each goes off to experience the world before returning to each other again. The Fantasticks score includes “Try to Remember,” “Soon It’s Gonna Rain” and “They Were You.”
In addition to Carter, The Fantasticks currently stars John Davidson, MacIntyre Dixon, Addi McDaniel, Michael Nostrand, Richard Roland, Daniel Rowan and Dan Sharkey.
Carter appeared in Seussical on Broadway. His film and TV appearances include Lizzie McGuire, Sabrina, the Teenage Witch, 7th Heaven, House of Carters, Fat Albert, Supercross and Popstar. Carter’s albums include Aaron Carter, Aaron’s Party (Come Get It), Oh Aaron and Another Earthquake.
